Equinix to expand data centre presence with 12 new facilities and 23 expansions through 2019

Equinix announces $1.7bn expansion project that will see it build 12 new data centres worldwide whilst expanding 23 existing IBX facilities

Global data centre company Equinix has announced that it plans to open 12 new International Business Exchange (IBX) data centres around the world through 2019.

The firm will also undertake expansion projects across 23 of its existing IBX data centre facilities over the same timeframe.

"As digital transformation is reshaping virtually every industry across the globe, companies are thinking differently about how they interact with every element of their supply chain, and a clear architecture of choice is emerging – one that is cloud-first, distributed and hybrid,” said Charles Meyers, CEO of Equinix, in the firm’s 8 May statement.

“To achieve this, their architecture needs to be deployed at the digital edge, where Equinix resides and continues to expand its unmatched global reach with the investments we are making in 2019 and beyond."

The expansion programme is projected to cost between US$1.7 and $1.9bn over the course of 2019, with the new IBX facilities set to mirror Equinix’s ongoing sustainability drive and commitment to renewable energies.

Equinix currently operates 202 IBX data centres around the world, with a presence in 24 countries, and its customers include almost 50% of the Fortune 500.

Kelly Morgan, VP of Datacenter Infrastructure and Services at 451 Research, added:

"Connectivity is critical for the development of modern distributed, hybrid, multi-cloud environments. Datacenter facilities that offer the ability to interconnect with an extensive ecosystem of network and cloud providers can provide enterprises with distinctive strategic advantages in their markets.

“Equinix's datacenters and its expanding interconnection platform provide the type of environment that enables companies to accelerate their cloud strategies and execute on digital transformation."
