According to a new report from Gartner, cloud solutions, cybersecurity and analytics are all expected to see a big spending increase within the public sector through 2018.
19% of governmental CIOs stated that they planned to increase spending on cloud services during the year ahead, whilst 17% cited cybersecurity and 16% mentioned analytics.
The survey gathered results from 461 government CIOs across 98 countries and a multitude of major industries, with digital transformation being ranked as the top business priority amongst these executives.
“Digital transformation revolves around data. To be successful, public sector CIOs need to focus on expanding their data and analytics capabilities and creating a data-centric culture, by increasing the availability of open data and APIs for internal use and public consumption,” said Rick Howard, Research Vice President at Gartner. “Building out data analytics infrastructure is fundamental to improving government program outcomes and services to citizens.”
Digital transformation ranked as a higher first priority for government CIOs than other industries (18% compared to 17%), with private sector companies ranking growth and increasing market share ahead of digital transformation.
Other key technology areas where organisations both expect to achieve their organisational mission and invest more heavily in the coming year include data centres; digital marketing; and networking, voice and data communications.
